St. Michael's encourages its parishioners to become active in our lay ministries.  Please contact our vicar if you would like to be involved in one or more of the following:

  • ALTAR GUILD:  Our Altar Guild is a ministry that supports the clergy in all forms of worship in the church by preparing the altar, communion vessels and clerical vestments in accordance with the Episcopal Church liturgical calendar. We care for the candles, altar linens and hangings, vestments and vessels so that they are clean, appropriate and available for all services including baptisms, weddings, funerals and memorial services, in addition to the special day services such as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil.
  • ACOLYTES: Acolytes are involved by carrying the cross and candles during the processional and recessional hymns.  They also participate in Holy Eucharist by assisting the Celebrant. We strongly encourage the youth of our church to become involved in this beautiful component of liturgy.
  • LAY READERS:  Lay Readers read the lessons and lead the recitation of the Psalm for each service, as well as lead the reading of the "Prayers of the People."
  • CHALICE BEARERS/LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS:  The bishop licenses lay persons to help with the administration of communion during Holy Eucharist.
  • OBLATION BEARERS:  Members of the congregation are asked to bring the elements (bread and wine) to the altar during the Offertory.
  • USHERS/GREETERS:   This most important ministry involves making visitors to St. Michael's feel comfortable the minute they walk through our front door.  A good first impression is vital to making visitors become active parishioners.
  • OUTREACH:  There are various committees and events that parishioners may partake in at St. Michael's.  The definition of outreach is that of "providing services and benefits to one's community."  St. Michael's operates a Thrift Shop (open Saturday mornings, 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, October through April), a Community Garden, and the Good Samaritan program.
  • MEN'S GROUP: Fr. Stowell is forming a group of men who would meet on a regular basis to do minor repairs around the church (painting, plumbing, cleaning, changing light bulbs,  etc.) and to enjoy fellowship together (such as a meal or other social activity). The group would be called Philip’s Fixers, and could meet on Saturdays or during the week as determined by the group’s members. If you are interested please contact Fr. Stowell during coffee hour or by phone anytime.
  • WOMEN'S GROUP:  All ladies of St. Michael's belong to the Women's Group.  They presently meet three times a year:  October, January, and March.  St. Michael's Thrift Shop's proceeds are used for various activities, such as sending children to church camp, as well as many other organizations and special church projects.  If you would like more information, please contact Jean Gehrke at (520) 723- 7574.
